By SANDRA K. REABUCK

BOSWELL — An 83-year-old borough woman was fatally injured Wednesday morning when her small car was hit by a coal truck as she was attempting to turn onto Route 219 from Route 30.

The victim was identified as Dorothy Howard, a widow, who was pronounced dead at 12:22 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room.

She had been airlifted from the accident scene to the hospital by medical helicopter.

Jeffrey Lees, Cambria County chief deputy coroner, said the cause of death was multiple upper torso trauma. The woman had been wearing a seat belt.

State police identified the driver of the tri-axle coal truck as Terry Shaffer, 62, of Hooversville. Police said that the truck is owned by Barron Trucking of Somerset.

Authorities said the woman was driving a 2004 Kia Rio eastbound on Route 30. She entered the left-turn lane and attempted to turn onto the ramp entering Route 219 north. She turned into the path of the westbound coal truck, it was reported.

The accident happened at 9:46 a.m. in Quemahoning Township.

Lees said that the woman’s family was unsure where she had been going at the time of the accident.
