Pressured by a Catholic-education monitoring group, St. Francis University has disinvited syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman from speaking on campus – a decision that has riled students and faculty alike.
Ironically, Goodman was to speak on civil public discourse when her invite was abruptly withdrawn.
St. Francis pulled the invitation because of her pro-choice views – a position she’s held for decades.
She said she was disappointed “at having my plea for civility returned with a pie in the face,” The Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Junior English lit major Eric Horell of Altoona – who lives on campus – characterized the reaction at the college as “shocked, more than anything.”
Because Goodman supports a woman’s right to an abortion, he chided, “We can’t respect her as a human being. We can’t listen to her.
“Even the most religious people on campus are upset about this,” Horell said.
“I’m pro-life. Even pro-lifers are upset, saying she wasn’t coming to speak about abortion.”
