EBENSBURG —
A Philadelphia man who was convicted of third-degree murder in a fatal Johnstown shooting pleaded guilty Thursday to a firearms charge for having and using a handgun in the slaying.
Marquis “G” Neal was convicted in early January of killing 21-year-old J-Quan “Scar” Lewis of New York City on Oct. 1, 2011.
The shooting occurred off Grandinetti Street in the Oakhurst Homes housing project in the city.
A co-defendant, Anthony Harvey, 29, Neal’s cousin who was also from Philadelphia, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter as the accomplice who drove Neal to and from the scene.
Neal, as a convicted felon, is prohibited by law from having a gun. The firearms charge – such a person not to use, own or possess a handgun – was separated from the murder case because prosecutors wouldn’t have been able to bring out Neal’s prior criminal record.
Judge Norman Krumenacker said Neal will be sentenced March 5, the same day he’s to be sentenced in the homicide case.
At the trial, Neal admitted to pulling out the gun and shooting Lewis, but testified that he had done so when Lewis put his hands into the pockets of his hoodie as if reaching for a gun.
However, police said there was no evidence that Lewis was armed that day.
The murder weapon was never recovered.
