JOHNSTOWN —
A group of youngsters got an opportunity on Saturday to tour the Public Safety Building.
Junior Chiefs toured the Washington Street facility and also witnessed a Johnstown police dog “attack” their coach.
It was part of “Pucks & Paws Night” to raise money for the Johnstown Police Department K-9 Corps.
About 60 people, including youngsters ages 5 to 12, participated before attending the Tomahawks game.
They saw the weight room where police work out.
“Why do you think we need to stay in shape?” K-9 Officer Mike Kanuch asked.
“So when you’re running you don’t run out of energy,” one boy said.
They also toured the processing room where suspects are booked, and police records room with deep files on those arrested.
They sat in the briefing room, saw the fingerprinting machine and visited four holding cells.
Junior Chief Landrey Burnheimer, 7, of Johnstown, said it was his favorite part of the tour.
“I got to go into the jail cell and laid in the bed,” he said.
Police Sgt. Michael Plunkard showed off a bulletproof shield, two police cameras and different types of firearms, including an AR-15 rifle.
Junior Chiefs coach Eric Dibble then donned a bite suit and experienced what it was like to be bitten by a police dog. The suit was to protect him from injury
“You can still feel him biting through the suit,” Dibble said.
The tour finished with a group photo of the Junior Chiefs, Kanuch and his 7-year old Belgian Malinois named Rocky.
