St. Francis waiting on police probe of fight before taking action

LORETTO — St. Francis University is taking a wait-and-see approach before determining what, if any, disciplinary actions will be taken against students involved in a fight that occurred early Sunday.

Spokeswoman Marie Young said the school will let troopers from the Ebensburg state police barracks conduct a full investigation before deciding what to do.

“We’re just kind of waiting ourselves to see where this all falls,” Young said.

Approximately 100 individuals were involved in the brawl, although almost all were bystanders, according to Young. The incident allegedly started as a verbal altercation involving members of the school’s football and men’s soccer teams. It then turned into a physical altercation that attracted a crowd. The school is not releasing the names of any participants. State police in Ebensburg had no comment beyond the initial police report.

Young said the main participants were definitely St. Francis students.

“This is not reflective of our values,” said Young. “We’ll be working with the students to have them understand why this is not something we’d want to be associated with.”

The fight took place at university-owned apartments on St. Joseph Street in Loretto Borough.

Five students were reportedly involved in the initial incident.

Two individuals sustained injuries that required hospital visits. Three were sent home.
