Kidnapping suspect charged

JOHNSTOWN — The search for a Johnstown man accused of kidnapping a woman at gunpoint ended Tuesday when the suspect surrendered to police.

Shane Cordarell Johnson, 25, of the 400 block of Coleman Avenue, turned himself in to police, who had been searching for him since Saturday, police Chief Craig Foust said.

In a criminal complaint, city police alleged that Johnson de­manded $600 and drugs when he showed up at the woman’s apartment at the Oakhurst Homes. Johnson allegedly pulled out a black pistol and told the woman he would hurt her if he didn’t get his money.

After the woman called a relative to ask for $300, Johnson allegedly forced her to leave two children, ages 5 months and 7 years, while they went to get the money.

Once they arrived at the second location, police said, the woman was able to run into the home and call police.

She identified Johnson, who fled, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Johnson was charged with kidnapping, simple assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned by District Judge Michael Musulin of Johns­town and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $100,000 bond.

    State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. The Cambria Heights school bus was carrying 27 students when the driver apparently blacked out and sheared off a pine tree between the Chest Spring and Patton areas, schools superintendent Michael Strasser said. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.   
    The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said.
