A fan who acts as Puckhead, an entertainer who frequently performs at Johnstown Chiefs hockey games, was injured when his fire-breathing act went awry before the game Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The man was taken to a hospital, said Kevin McGeehan, the Chiefs’ vice president of business operations.
He declined to identify the unofficial mascot.
A witness at the game said Puckhead came onto the ice and poured a flammableliquid in his mouth so hecould breathe fire.
The act didn’t go to according to plan, so the entertainer tried again.
The second time, Puckhead’s fake beard and jersey caught fire. An arena staffer rushed to help Puckhead pull off his jersey and put out the fire. The entertainer tore off his beard.
He was able to walk off the ice under his own power, witnesses said.
McGeehan said the Chiefs are investigating.
The Chiefs were playing the Reading Royals.
