Four area women lead push for young professionals group
Four women are spearheading the reorganization of a young professionals group in the Greater Johnstown region.
The organization is for those between the ages of 21 to 45, said Helene Gleason, one of the four.
The others are Adia Constantine, Megan Seese and Jill Skowron.
Gleason, 29, is communications coordinator/physician liaison at Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. Constantine, 30, is executive director of Art Works in Johnstown! at 413 Third Ave. in Cambria City. Seese, 28, and Skowron, 29, are employed at Concurrent Technologies Corp. in Richland Township in Web design.
Gleason said a similar group for young professionals has not been active for several years.
The fledgling organization will hold a Kickoff Happy Hour from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Johnstown Brewing Company off Menoher Boulevard near the Westmont-Southmont line. A St. Patrick’s Day Shindig will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 14 at Art Works.
Gleason said the Johnstown area has no shortage of young professionals.
“We want to bring them together to share experiences and talk about common interests,” she said.
Activities could be both business related and social, she said. There could be community service projects as well, she added.
Those attending the Kickoff Happy Hour will be given an informal survey to fill out centering on their interests and ideas they may have for the new group, Gleason said.
“We want the group to be something positive for the community,” she said.
Constantine sees the organization as an opportunity to create a greater sense of community.
It should serve to forge closer connections among the region’s young professionals, she said.
Seese said the area has many people with many good ideas, but there doesn’t seem to be a means to bring the people and their ideas together.
Perhaps a young professionals organization could be that catalyst, she said.
She’s hoping for good turnouts at the two upcoming meetings.
It will be important for those getting involved to feel they have ownership in the new group, Seese said.
She said younger workers appreciate the area’s quality of life, but many want to meet new people and become more involved in their communities.
Skowron is excited.
“There’s so much potential here,” she said.
“My goal is to get things organized and make things happen,” she said.
She believes the young professionals can be a powerful force.
“I’m excited about getting things done,” she said.
