Borough police crack down on aggressive drivers

SOMERSET – Reckless drivers in Somerset Borough are on notice: Slow down or get ticketed.

Somerset police are targeting reckless driving as part of traffic enforcement until April 20.

“Aggressive drivers are the No. 1 complaint,” Somerset police Chief Randy Cox said. “Reckless driving, speeding ...”

Police are stepping up patrols along areas including Center Avenue, Edgewood Avenue, Patriot Street and Main Street.

A similar crackdown two weeks ago resulted in the issuing of 200 citations, but the action was met with criticism by some residents.

They contended the traffic patrol was a misplaced priority when a spree of armed robberies had hit the borough.

The traffic patrols did not involve criminal investigators, Cox said.

Police last week apprehended a Somerset man and charged him in connection with three Somerset-area armed robberies.

The latest traffic detail is being paid for with a $1,250 state grant.

Residents can request traffic patrols for their neighborhood by contacting Somerset police: 445-4596.
