Community Foundation announces $97G in grants

The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies Distribution Committee recently approved $97,325 in solicited grants for charitable organizations serving Cambria, Somerset and Bedford counties.

“This round was particularly challenging because of the high volume of applications,” said Mike Kane, executive director of the foundation.

The total amount of grants and scholarship given out by the foundation so far in the fiscal year totals $1,861,576.

Deadline for the fall round is Aug. 29.

The Community Foundation was founded in 1990 and is governed by a board of directors from the three counties. For additional information call 536-7741 or visit www.cfalleghenies.org online.

Organizations that received grants, grant amounts, their benefactors and where the money will go include:

Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society, $4,000, for handicap accessibility.

The Pennsylvania Consort, $1,500, Benjamin Bosler Fund, The Bay Street Brassworks.

The Pennsylvania Consort, $1,500, Benjamin Bosler Fund, The Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra at the Bedford Springs Music Festival.

Cambria Somerset County Multiple Sclerosis Society Inc., $2,000, Benjamin Bosler Fund, expansion of water message therapy program.

Special Olympics of Pennsylvania, $1,000, Benjamin Bosler Fund, athlete and program support.

The National Museum of the American Coverlet, Inc., $1,000, Penelec Fund for the Future of Greater Johnstown Fund, stewardship 2008.

Penns Woods Council - Boys Scouts of America, $2,500, Penelec Fund for the Future of Greater Johnstown Fund, expansion of Learning for Life program.

Penns Woods Council - Boy Scouts of America, $1,500, Robert Waters Charitable Trust - unrestricted grant, The Gift of Nature to Urban Youth.
