LILLY – It’s Firemen’s Week in Lilly – a carnival that has raised enough money in the past to purchase a new truck for the volunteers. The celebration begins today at the pavilion grounds on Railroad Street, behind the fire hall.
New this year is a rock ‘n roll event, “Rock Star Challenge,” a competition for cash prizes.
The band Felix and the Hurricanes, from Gallitzin, will play at 8 p.m. Thursday, and disc jockeys will provide music the other nights, fire President Paul Sklodowski said.
Food sales, game booths and rides start at 7 every night, and the parade starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday on Main Street.
The new pumper truck also will be on display.
The carnival runs through the weekend.
Somerset council holds
meeting in new location
SOMERSET – Borough Council members held their first meeting Monday night at the new municipal meeting place across West Union Street from the borough offices’ old location.
Members held a small ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $1.4 million construction, financed from reserve funds.
The former building is being renovated to become a public safety building to house police and fire services. In the meantime, the police department is moved to the former Papa John’s building on West Main Street. Borough officials are planning an open house for August.
Agency promoting
severe-weather awareness
EBENSBURG – The Cambria County Emergency Management Agency, in cooperation with the National Weather Service in State College, will hold a severe weather awareness program at 6:30 p.m. July 1 at the Cambria County Courthouse.
The free program is open to not only area police, fire, EMS and emergency management personnel, but also the general public.
Advance registration is not required, agency Director Ron Springer said.
The two-hour program will highlight severe weather indicators and provide safety tips on how to react to such events, Springer said. The program will be presented by a forecaster from the National Weather Service.
