A large tree came crashing down across Menoher Boulevard near Haynes Street Monday night, knocking out power to lower Kernville and destroying a billboard, the Johnstown Fire Department said.
A Penelec crew responding to the scene was able to restore some of the power lost when the tree pulled down a 13,000-volt line, fire Capt. Neil Crossen said.
A block of Menoher Boulevard between Haynes and South streets would be closed until this morning while Penelec makes repairs to its equipment, he said.
The tree smashed the billboard on its way down with the top of the tree come to rest against a warehouse on the opposite side of the street, he said.
The warehouse was not damaged.
Winner of Route 22 project bid announced
PennDOT has announced bid results for the Route 22 rehabilitation project from the Ebensburg interchange to Route 2013, Wilmore Road, in Cambria Township.
New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. of New Enterprise was the lowest of four bidders at $2.4 million.
The one-mile project consists of concrete patching and bituminous overlay, guardrail updates, drainage improvements, pavement markings and sign modifications.
Also included is the rehabilitation of the eastbound off-ramp and the westbound
on-ramp along with a single span reinforced concrete
T-beam bridge over Howell’s Run.
The work is anticipated to begin in August and is expected to be completed by late June.
Report: Driver killed was intoxicated
STRONGSTOWN – A Beaverdale motorist who was killed July 4 when his car crossed the center line and struck a tractor-trailer on Route 422 near Strongstown was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to just-released test results.
Laboratory reports indicate that Caleb Jon Strayer, 20, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.111 percent at the time of the accident, Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said.
The legal limit for drivers is 0.08 percent.
