Pipe bomb exploded in golf course hole

GREENSBURG — State police say someone used a pipe bomb to make one hole a lot bigger than normal on a Westmoreland County golf course.

State police say someone exploded a suspected pipe bomb in the hole of the fifth green at Valley Green Golf Club sometime between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Police are still searching for a suspect and are at a loss to explain the incident.

Frank Powaski, who works in the golf club’s pro shop, says the explosion created a hole about a foot-and-a-half in diameter on the green.

Powaski says players are still using the green because another regulation size golf hole has been cut into another location.
