EBENSBURG — Cambria County commissioners moved forward Friday on completing legal requirements for obtaining a $6 million loan to pay bills and payrolls through the end of the year and on Jan. 2.

The commissioners adopted an ordinance that increases the county indebtedness by $6 million, which is to be repaid over five years.

The borrowing had been approved earlier this week by three county judges.

The money is being borrowed from First National Bank, with the interest rate to be set at the closing.

The loan was necessary because the county’s general fund has been depleted to pay bills for the financially troubled Laurel Crest, the county nursing home.

Skiers hit slopes at Seven Springs

SOMERSET – There’s snow in the mountains.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort opened for skiing Friday under a blanket of natural and man-made snow.

“You should see all the people here,” resort spokeswoman Anna Weltz said Friday afternoon. “You would not believe all the cars. It’s just phenomenal.”

The Wagner, Upper Phillips Run, Fawn Lane, Wagner Beginner area and Foggy Bowl slopes will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A schedule for next week had not yet been determined, Weltz said.

Neighboring Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort and Blue Knob near Claysburg intend to open on Friday.
