NANTY GLO — Borough police charged a woman with assault after she allegedly punched officers and “made threats of suicide” by asking police to shoot her.
Nanty Glo police said Friday they were called to a domestic incident at a home on Fourth Street.
In a court document, police said that during the investigation a woman identified as Carol Lynn Zeglen, 42, of that address, became combative and punched two officers in the face.
She was arraigned by District Judge Max Pavlovich of Richland Township, the on-call magistrate, on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Zeglen was taken to the Cambria County Jail after failing to post $10,000 bond.
Dilltown resident faces jail for drug offenses
Stacie Turner, 32, of Dilltown was sentenced Monday in federal court in Johnstown to 30 months imprisonment and five years supervised release on her conviction for various narcotics offenses.
U.S. District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the sentence.
Turner and six codefendants conspired to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin from Feb. 10 to Sept. 1, 2005, according to information presented to the court by Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Valkovci Jr.
Turner also distributed less than 100 grams of heroin on Feb. 20, 2008.
U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan commended the FBI, Laurel Highlands Resident Agency and Cambria County Drug Task Force for their investigation.
State declares end to region’s drought
HARRISBURG – The drought watch declaration for 29 counties in western and northcentral Pennsylvania, including Cambria and Somerset, was lifted Monday by Environmental Protection Acting Secretary John Hanger.
Among the other affected counties nearby are Fayette, Indiana, Jefferson and Westmoreland.
“Although we saw below-average precipitation through much of the autumn, precipitation during the month of December was 2 to 5 inches above average, and a review of county monitoring gauges shows that average stream flows have risen to above normal conditions across the state,” Hanger said.
The drought watch was declared Nov. 7.
Voters group offers workshop for hopefuls
INDIANA – The League of Women Voters of Indiana County will hold a workshop for anyone who is considering running for school board director or local government official in the primary election.
The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Rustic Lodge in Indiana.
There will be two parallel morning workshops, one for school board director candidates and one for local government candidates in townships and boroughs. The day will conclude with a luncheon and a “nuts and bolts” session on “How to Run for Office: A Guide to Becoming a Successful Candidate.”
The $40 registration fee includes a continental breakfast and luncheon as well as handout materials. Some scholarships are available.
