SOMERSET – A motorcyclist was airlifted to a hospital after crashing his bike while making a turn, Somerset Borough police said.
Dustin Cox, 20, of Somerset, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle east on Felgar Road about 4:17 p.m. Thursday when he lost control at the intersection with North Franklin Avenue.
The bike slid into a Ford Explorer driven by Dawn Fisher, 46, address unavailable.
Cox was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Johns-town. His condition was not immediately available.
Fisher was not injured, police said. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
Retired military officer receives awards
William Russell, a Republican who ran for the 12th Congressional District seat, has received two awards from the Army.
Russell, who retired from the service last year as a lieutenant colonel, was presented the Meritorious Service Medal and Legion of Merit on Thursday at the Army Reserve center on Goucher Street.
Russell mounted an unsuccessful campaign last year against U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, and has said he plans another run next year.
Poker run will aid wounded soldier
PORTAGE – A benefit motorcycle poker run will be held Saturday for Army
Spc. Keith Maul, who was injured while serving in Iraq.
Sponsored by Portage American Legion Post 430 in conjunction with Rotorheads Veterans Riding Group, the ride will leave at 1 p.m. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
The cost is $15 per rider.

Maul, of Portage, was wounded Feb. 17 in a grenade attack northwest of Baghdad while serving with the 56th Stryker Brigade. He lost an arm and a leg, and is recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
Proceeds from the run will help to pay transportation costs for his family.
Students can cash in on good behavior
The Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center is holding its first Spartan Pride Auction from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. today in the school cafeteria at 445 Schoolhouse Road.
Spartan Pride is a program to increase self-esteem and self-respect among students.
They are rewarded with “Spartan bucks” for exhibiting positive behavior such as good attendance, teamwork and good grades. They can spend the bucks at the auction.
Downtown walkers
plan inaugural stroll
The Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership will host the first meeting of the Downtown Walking Club at noon today at the gazebo in Central Park.
Weather permitting, the group will meet each Friday at that time for a 30-minute walk through downtown.
The “Downtown Johnstown Walking Guide” will be available. It includes a map highlighted with suggested walks and their distances.
There is no cost to join, and free pedometers will be available to participants while supplies last. The meters are available at Donna Christopher’s State Farm office, 229 Main St.
