JOHNSTOWN —
Several fire companies responded to a fire Wednesday afternoon that caused extensive damage to a two-story home on Spear Avenue in Westmont.
One firefighter was treated at the hospital for injuries received when a car ran over his foot while directing traffic, said Chief Don Blasko of the West Hills Regional Fire Department.
The bulk of the fire was in a crawl space in a second-floor bedroom. Flames extended into an adjacent bathroom and then to the kitchen below, Blasko said.
“Firefighters made a very good stop on the fire,” he said about their efforts to contain the fire to the kitchen.
A state police fire marshal was asked to determine the cause of the blaze, reported around 3 p.m., he said. The fire is not suspicious, he said.
There is insurance.
A baby-sitter was watching two children at the residence, occupied by the Roman family, he said. The three had left to get ice cream and upon returning, smelled smoke, he said. The baby-sitter reported the fire.
The family is staying nearby with relatives. The Red Cross is assisting the family, Blasko said.
The Salvation Army was at the scene to aid firefighters, he said.
