First UPJ medal recipient aided education in Africa

JOHNSTOWN — Mary Rose of Milwaukee will receive the first President’s Medal of Excellence at Pitt-Johns-town’s 38th commencement ceremony today.

The award, established by President Jem Spectar, is to be given to an individual who has strengthened communities by empowering people to achieve their fullest potential, contribute to the dignity of all and promote social progress.

Rose was selected in recognition of her work to raise the standards of education for women globally. Her efforts have resulted in the construction of a dormitory and educational development center at St. Joseph’s Vocational School for girls in the missionary community of Bafut, Cameroon.

She raised more than $500,000, and the dormitory and educational center were opened in 2008.

Rose continues to be involved with St. Joseph’s School.

She also has earned the 2008 Madonna Medal for Community Service from Mount Mary College and the 2008 Vatican II Award for Service to the Missions.

“Give a woman an education and you educate a community,” she said.

More than 360 seniors will participate in the commencement ceremony, which will begin at

1 p.m. today in the Sports Center.
