Democrats plan fall campaign rallies

The Cambria County Democratic Committee will open its fall campaign with a rally at 7 p.m. today at Ace’s Lounge, 316 Chestnut St. in Johnstown.

Other rallies on the schedule will be held at 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:

Oct. 1: Gallitzin Italian Club.

Oct 8: Joey Dell’s Lounge, 2001 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Oct. 14: St. Michael fire hall.

Oct. 22: St. Benedict Community Center.

Oct. 29: Ebensburg VFW.

In addition, the campaign will wrap up with the fall breakfast at 9 a.m. Oct. 31 at Ace’s Lounge.

Man charged with harassment in fight over keys

NEW FLORENCE – State police arrested a man on harassment charges after they said he pulled the hair of a woman who

wouldn’t give him the keys to the car.

Patrick Miller, 40, of McIntyre was charged after the incident early Sunday on Chestnut Street in Robinson. Police said Christina Motz, 37, didn’t want Miller driving because he had been drinking.

VA Center getting $3M in stimulus funds

ALTOONA – The Van Zandt VA Medical Center is receiving close to $3 million in federal stimulus funds for a number of projects to enhance patient safety and comfort at the hospital.

Projects to be completed include remodeling the cafeteria and improving the electrical, heating and air conditioning systems.

The cafeteria work will include new tables and chairs, a redone kitchen and new equipment. Jeff Thompson, facilities manager, said the work will begin in October and take about six months to complete.

Indiana courthouse adds waiting area

INDIANA – A room dedicated to victims and witnesses involved in criminal cases has been opened in the Indiana County Courthouse, District Attorney Thomas M. Bianco said.

The room will serve as a meeting place and waiting area for victims and witnesses called to testify in Common Pleas Court.

The room will help eliminate the volatile situation that can arise when a victim is in close proximity to a person he or she will testify against, Bianco said. He believes the room will also be important in child victim cases.

St. Francis to host open house

LORETTO – St. Francis University will host an open house for prospective students and their families on Saturday. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the John F. Kennedy Student Center Lounge.

Prospective students can speak to representatives about the university’s majors and concentrations at the academic and activities fair. A tour of the campus will be given.

The open house will feature a presentation on the financial aid process. Financial aid representatives will be present to answer individual questions and to talk about the scholarships and grants available.

GED test offered Oct. 10

The General Education Development test will be held beginning at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at East Side Elementary School.

The cost of the test is $10 per section or $50 for all sections.
