SALISBURY — Three slabs
of Philadelphia black mist
granite weighing a total of 9,000 pounds will be delivered Tuesday as the next step in the creation of Memorial Park.
It will be the first educational monument of its kind in the area.
Each slab will depict scenes from past wars. Veterans from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan will be recognized.
The delivery will be made at
7 a.m. to the site at 80 Grant St.
The slabs were crafted by Granite Industries of Vermont and installation will be handled by Summit Contracting.
The memorial and park are being created at a cost well exceeding $100,000, said Kay Kemp, financial director for the memorial and president of the area Chamber of Commerce.
Salisbury resident Earl Thomas is president of the memorial association.
The land was donated, Kemp said Thursday, but $8,500 still is owed on the work.
“We have really been lucky,” she said. “A lot of people have helped us a lot. Those involved have worked long and hard on this project to honor our veterans. We will acknowledge everyone that has participated in this at a later time.”
The land for the site was deeded to Salisbury American Legion Post 459 and Salisbury VFW Post 8826 by Mabel McKenzie.
The Salisbury Elk Lick Veterans Memorial Association, Salisbury American Legion Post and Salisbury VFW Post have been working in conjunction for several years to advance the project.
Past benefits to raise money for this project have included an auction, concert and the selling of chances. State Sen. Richard Kasunic, D-Dunbar, and former state Rep. Bob Bastian, R-Somerset, secured some state money.
The VFW has held several bazaars and soup and bake sales, and has donated money. The American Legion helped the organization with several of the projects and is planning a benefit in the near future.
Erection of the flag poles and flags, as well as overseeing the installation of the pavers, is under the supervision of the American Legion and VFW.
“We’re grateful for everything,” Kemp reiterated.
