In brief: Firefighters called to silo fire

BAKERSVILLE — Six fire companies were called around 10:20 a.m. Monday to battle a fire that erupted spontaneously inside a silo on a farm on White Oak Road near Bakersville, a fire official said.

Bakersville Fire Chief Willie Walker said the 60-foot-tall silo, which was beside a barn, was about three-quarters filled with old silage with the fire burning at the midsection of the fodder. He said it was impossible for firefighters to get to the burning silage, so Stoy Excavating of Somerset was called to pull the silo off of its foundation and away from the barn. Firefighters then were able to reach the blaze and douse it, he said.

There was no damage to the barn, he said.

Like many of those involved in Heart Association benefits, Spencer Ivock was inspired by his own family members' experience with heart disease.
