BAKERSVILLE — Six fire companies were called around 10:20 a.m. Monday to battle a fire that erupted spontaneously inside a silo on a farm on White Oak Road near Bakersville, a fire official said.
Bakersville Fire Chief Willie Walker said the 60-foot-tall silo, which was beside a barn, was about three-quarters filled with old silage with the fire burning at the midsection of the fodder. He said it was impossible for firefighters to get to the burning silage, so Stoy Excavating of Somerset was called to pull the silo off of its foundation and away from the barn. Firefighters then were able to reach the blaze and douse it, he said.
There was no damage to the barn, he said.
Vintondale man will stand trial on rape charges
VINCO – A Vintondale man accused of raping a juvenile who is mildly retarded will stand trial in Cambria County Court.
Barry C. Hostetler, 39, of Olympian Way, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday before District Judge Mary Ann Zanghi of Vinco.
Jackson Township police said Hostetler had sex eight times with the girl, whom he knew to be retarded, between May 1 and July 31.
Hostetler faces counts of rape and corruption of minors. He is being held in the Cambria County Prison.
VA offering flu shots to veterans
The James E. VanZandt VA Medical Center is offering flu shots to veterans in Cambria County on Saturday.
The shots will be administered from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic located at 1425 Scalp Ave., Suite 29.
Shots will be given to veterans of Indiana County from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the VFW at 824 Indian Springs Road in Indiana.
Veterans in Clearfield County can receive the shots on Tuesday at the American Legion Post, 315 Liberty Boulevard, DuBois.

Co-authors to discuss religion at IUP tonight
INDIANA – IUP will host a program with co-authors Carl Peraino and James W. Sire based on their book, “Deepest Differences: A Christian-Atheist Dialogue” at 8 p.m. today at Eberly College of Business and Information Technology auditorium.
The presentation is free to the public.
The program is designed to offer a civil discussion of the deepest differences between a dedicated scientist and a devout Christian.
