NANTY GLO — A Nanty Glo family escaped injury Sunday after their home caught fire.
A state police fire marshal is investigating what started the 10:30 a.m. fire at 1060 Vine St. Nanty Glo fire Chief Joe LaMantia said the fire started near the flu of a coal furnace that was burning at the time. Two members of the Fye family got out in time, he said.
They were staying with family members after fire officials disconnected power and water.
The fire damaged the dining room area and extended into the wall, also damaging a second floor bathroom, LaMantia said.
Firefighters from Jackson Township, Revloc and Cover assisted.
Rockwood woman accused of robbery attempt
ROCKWOOD – A Rockwood woman was jailed after state police said she allegedly attempted to rob a store with a toy gun on Friday.
State police in Somerset said Jacqueline Faye Moore, 20, left her 5-month-old son at her apartment, walked uptown to
S&S; Quick Stop, 1010 E. Main St., waited for customers to leave and then put on a mask and tried to steal a can of snuff.
She allegedly pointed a gun at the clerk and told her to give her all the snuff or she would “shoot her brains out,” troopers said.
The clerk refused to comply and Moore walked home.
Troopers said they found Moore at her apartment and recovered a toy gun.
Moore was arraigned by on-call District Judge Sandra Stevanus of Confluence and sent to the Somerset County Jail after failing to post $75,000 bond.
UPJ students return to Oak Hall rooms
Seventy-five residents of Oak Hall on the Pitt-Johnstown campus were allowed to return to their rooms at midnight after being evacuated late Saturday evening when campus police “determined that an unknown irritant was present in the air,” the university said.
The incident occurred at 9:20 p.m., when police responded to a report of an individual experiencing difficulty breathing in Oak Hall. Cambria County Emergency Management Services and Richland firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the building was ventilated, UPJ spokesman Robert Knipple said.
The Richland Fire Department is expected to provide a report to the university today, Knipple said.
All residents of Oak Hall had been relocated to the Cambria Room in the Student Union and were accounted for, he said.
