Separate crashes kill 2 in region

Separate ATV and automobile crashes Sunday evening claimed the lives of two area residents.

Corey R. Clites, 32, of Hyndman, was killed in the all-terrain vehicle accident and Anthony Paul Smay, 33, of St. Michael, was killed in a single-car crash, authorities said.

Clites was driving the ATV east on Fairhope Road in Fairfield Township, Somerset County, when it went out of control and flipped several times shortly before 6 p.m., state police said.

He was wearing a helmet, they said.

Clites was taken to Cumberland Hospital in Maryland and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department provided assistance at the accident scene.

Smay was killed in a one-car crash on Ragers Hill Road in Adams Township around 9 p.m., township police said.

The cause of death was a chest injury, said Pete Long, a Cambria County deputy coroner.

The 2003-model car was southbound when it left the roadway and struck a vehicle parked on the berm, police said.

The accident happened near Lamb’s Bridge.

Smay was traveling alone, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m. in the emergency room at Memorial Medical Center.

The accident remains under investigation, Long said.
