NANTY GLO — Nanty Glo officials are rolling out the welcome mat for any new neighbors who might want to come to town.
They’re creating a new five-lot development north of Rogers Street to entice residential development. They’re arranging for water and sewer, electricity and a road to be put in.
Residents must build their own homes.
The borough, for its part, would see an increased tax base.
Councilman Steve Szymusiak is ready with his sales pitch.
“We have a nice, friendly community,” he said. “Where these lots are located is in a nice, residential area with minimal traffic. Our school system is fantastic. If you have kids, we’re tops. And there’s somewhat of a view where these homes are going.”
The deed restrictions seem ordinary. Homes must be at least 1,200 square feet – Szymusiak expects them to be 1,200 to 1,300 square feet
– and the exterior of the houses and other structures must be completed within a year of the lot purchase.
Borough secretary Melissa Weekes said the pipelines are being put in by the Nanty Glo Water Authority and should be in place by spring. The tap-in fees will be included in the price of the lots, which may be decided this year following an appraisal.
A cul-de-sac will serve the 3.2-acre tract.
“It’s not a big investment,” Weekes said.
The borough is trying its hand at marketing the Burns Street development after an outside company examined the project several years ago but it never got off the ground.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” Szymusiak said. “The borough has property and we have people who are interested in building new. We’re looking to just break even. We’re looking to get taxes into the town.”
