Point Marion Bridge implosion delayed a week

POINT MARION — The demolition of one of the most dangerous bridges in southwestern Pennsylvania has been delayed a week.

PennDOT officials pushed back Monday’s scheduled demolition of the Point Marion Bridge until Nov. 16. Crews wanted to move extra weight off the bridge’s deck before it is imploded.

PennDOT had rated the bridge structurally deficient and it is considered one of the most dangerous in the state. The bridge closed Oct. 22 when a new $21 million replacement opened nearby.

The bridge carries Route 88 over the Monongahela River on the border of Fayette and Greene counties about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh.
