EHRENFELD — A Somerset County man was arraigned on drug charges stemming from a police chase in Croyle Township last month.
Hillard Fenton West, 29, of Boswell, was picked up on an arrest warrant and arraigned Friday for an incident that happened Oct. 17.
State police in Ebensburg said a trooper attempted to stop West for displaying an expired registration on his vehicle when the driver turned onto state Route 53 and fled toward South Fork.
West then turned right and drove his vehicle across the railroad bridge to Ehrenfeld Borough, then turned right onto Penn Street, where troopers stopped him at the intersection of Penn Street and 2nd Avenue.
After West was handcuffed he allegedly told a trooper he had a “bowl” in his pocket.
Troopers seized the marijuana pipe.
West was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. He also faces various traffic charges.
West was arraigned by on-call District Judge Rick Varner of Salix and was released on $10,000 unsecured bond.
Family rescued after boat capsizes
NEW ALEXANDRIA – Emergency crews said a family of three is safe after their boat capsized on a lake.
New Alexandria fire Lt. Chuck Ferry said the family had to be rescued about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Ferry said the husband, wife and their teenage daughter were fishing on Loyalhanna Lake when their boat capsized.
They had life preservers on board, but were not wearing them when rescue crews arrived to pull them from the chilly water.
Ferry said the family was likely in the water for about 20 minutes before they were rescued.
Officials have not released the names of the family.
Fayette County has second swine flu death
UNIONTOWN – The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed a second swine flu death in Fayette County.
The health department wasn’t releasing any specifics about the new case on Monday.
Earlier this month, a 31-year-old Connellsville woman died of the H1N1 flu.
A total of 29 people have died of the swine flu in Pennsylvania, and there have been 9,460 confirmed or probable cases of the swine flu in the state.
Indiana Co. crash injures four
HOME – Four people suffered major injuries after a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am wrecked on Route 85 on Saturday evening.
State police in Indiana said the driver, Richard R. Treese, 26, of Creekside, lost control of the car, which left the road and struck a large tree.
Police said he is facing DUI charges.
He and his three passengers all were taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center.
Police identified them as Bobbie J. Miller, 30, of Kittanning; Angela R. Leasure, 29, of Clymer; and Clifford M. Ruffner, 33, of Marion Center.
Boswell resident charged for loud music
BOSWELL – A Boswell man was charged with disorderly conduct Sunday after a state trooper said he was blaring music.
The trooper said he could hear music coming from the residence of James Nichols, 22, of 213 Main St., from two blocks away. The trooper said he was responding to another incident when he heard the racket.
The trooper said Nichols’ neighbors complained.
Somerset Area leads in scholastic competition
Somerset Area remains the leader in the Central Western Scholastic Quiz League after the seventh and final round of play.
Results of last week’s scores were Richland 42, Central Cambria 16; Westmont Hilltop 48, Northern Cambria 19; Conemaugh Valley 35, Cambria Heights 3; Bishop McCort 42, Forest Hills 21; Greater Johnstown 41, and Bishop Carroll 22.
Four teams – Penn Cambria, Windber Area, Portage Area and Somerset Area – had byes.
The eight top teams – Somerset Area, Bishop McCort, Westmont Hilltop, Greater Johnstown, Windber Area, Forest Hills, Conemaugh Valley and Penn Cambria – will compete in the championship round at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center.
