VINCO – Jackson Township will hold its fourth annual light-up night from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Park, 200 Adams St.
The event will feature more than 25,000 lights as well at the popular Festival of Trees.
The festival this year has
24 entries in two categories: Business and commercial, and groups and organizations.
Everyone attending will be able to vote for his or her three favorite trees in each category.
In addition, local church groups and a Jackson Elementary School chorus will sing carols. Refreshments will be served.
The highlight will be a visit from Santa, and every child will receive a treat. Photos with Santa also will be sold.
Soroptimists seek
nominees for 2 awards
SOMERSET – Soroptimist International of Somerset County, a volunteer service organization for women in business and management, is accepting applications for its Violet Richardson Award. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday.
Each year, Soroptimists select three girls between the ages of 14 and 17 who are caring, creative and committed to making the world a better place. The top three winners will receive cash prizes.
The organization also is accepting applications for its Women’s Opportunity Award.
This award is given to a head-of-household woman seeking financial aid to go back to school to upgrade her life and that of her family.
The Soroptimists will provide a $500 cash grant to the award winner, who will then advance to the regional level. Applications must be returned by Dec. 15.

Firearms stolen
from Penn Run home
PENN RUN – A rifle and two shotguns were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Woodpecker Drive, state police said.
The weapons were taken between Nov. 18 and Thanksgiving.
Cambria supervisors
to buy K-9 vehicle
EBENSBURG – The Cambria Township supervisors have approved the purchase of a K-9 police cruiser through the state purchase program.
The vehicle is a 2010 Chevrolet and will cost $25,000.
Supervisors also endorsed an agreement saying that if the township does work for the state, the state will return the service.
Meanwhile, the supervisors have changed their Dec. 28 meeting to Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. in the township building.
Clothing donations
needed for Mitten Tree
The Mitten Tree collection of winter apparel for the needy will be on display in the UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital lobby through Dec. 11.
Co-sponsored by Fort Bedford CB Club, the annual drive provides mittens, hats, gloves, jackets, socks, shoes, boots and other new gift items.
Unwrapped donations may be placed under the tree at the hospital.
