GREENSBURG — A coroner has scheduled an inquest into the death of a Maryland man fatally shot by police at an off-campus apartment near a western Pennsylvania university.
Twenty-two-year-old Joseph Briggs, of Dickerson, Md., was killed Feb. 15 after a three-hour standoff near Seton Hill University in Greensburg. That’s about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Authorities say Briggs used several weapons to fire 30 to 40 shots at police, hitting only parked cars and a house after a night of heavy drinking.
Seton Hill is a private, Catholic school with about 2,000 students.
The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office has set the inquest for Dec. 15.
