VIDEO | Globetrotters spell out ABCs of anti-bullying

JOHNSTOWN — Wun “The Shot” Versher of the Harlem Globetrotters brought some basketball antics with a message to three local schools on Tuesday.

“Today we are talking about an anti-bullying program that we call the ABCs of bullying,” Versher said at Our Mother of Sorrows School in Westmont.

“It stands for ‘action, bravery and compassion.’ They are really just simple tips that we like to give.”

Versher, who has been with the Globetrotters for 18 years, was in Johnstown promoting the team’s show, scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in Cambria County War Memorial.

In addition to Our Mother of Sorrows, Versher stopped at Richland High School and St. Benedict Elementary in Richland.

The ABCs, he said, provide an easy way to address bullying.

“Action is the action to tell,” Versher said. “Bravery is to walk away, and compassion is to be friendly, or be a friend to your classmates.

“They are effective and simple things that kids can do, in a nonviolent way, to eliminate bullying.”

Versher told the OMOS students the school programs represent one of his favorite parts of the job – after basketball.

“We are definitely ambassadors of goodwill,” Versher said.

“For 86 years, people have known the Harlem Globetrotters as good family, wholesome entertainment. I think we take that as being role models, and try to use the popularity of the Harlem Globetrotters to spread the message to stop bullying.”
