JOHNSTOWN —
Joyce Murtha will serve as honorary chairwoman for the 34th annual Girl Scout Awards of Distinction Dinner at 6 p.m. May 2 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Westmont.
Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania is a leadership development organization for girls with more than 35,000 members ages 5-17.
Former Pennsylvania first lady Michele Moore Ridge will be the keynote speaker.
Ridge’s career is noted for service to children, higher education, her community, her family and the state. As first lady, her top priority was the prevention of violence against youth.
Ridge will discuss the importance of volunteerism and her time in the Governor’s Mansion.
Robert Eyer, CEO of Wessel & Company of Johnstown, will receive the 2011 Community Leader Award.
Eyer has more than 30 years of public accounting experience and six years of experience in Fortune 500 audit engagements.
He serves on the board of several organizations, including the Greater Johns-town/Cambria County Chamber of Commerce, Veteran Community Initiatives Inc. and the YMCA Advisory Committee.
Eyer has received numerous awards such as being named in the Top 100 People by Pennsylvania Business Central and Veteran of the Year.
Named to the 100 Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the third straight year, Wessel & Company has been in business for more than 50 years.
The members of Girl Scout Troop 40978 will be presented with the Troop of Distinction Award in honor of their outstanding leadership and service to the Johnstown community.
The troop has built awareness on topics such as melanoma cancer and Internet security. The troop also has worked to support the Johnstown YMCA and the Salvation Army. Four girls have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, and two will complete their projects by year’s end. All nine of the troop’s members have received their Girl Scout Silver Award.
