The combined efforts of Cambria County, a northern Cambria development organization and local officials is bringing much-needed elderly housing to the Hastings area.
The county commissioners Thursday approved a developer’s agreement between the Cambria County Redevelopment Authority and the Northern Cambria Community Development Corp. in the amount of $550,000.
The money is a grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development funneled through the county, which the development corporation will use to build three cottages that will serve as rental units for the elderly.
“This goes to show where agencies and the community work together, what can be accomplished,” said Matt Barczak, the corporation’s executive director.
The county redevelopment authority will administer the funds and serve in an oversight capacity for withdrawal of the money and what Executive Director Larry Custer termed as “things of that nature.”
Ultimately, the Northern Cambria group will be the owner and manager of the units, all of which will have two bedrooms, Barczak said.
Plans are to get the project under construction in the summer with completion by early next year.
The cottages are being built on a tract of land on Third Avenue in the borough that is owned by the Hastings Area Industrial Development Agency, Barczak said.
Hastings Borough and the municipal authority are waiving any tap fees for water and sewer connections.
