Upper Yoder denies owing Pa. for audit

JOHNSTOWN — Upper Yoder Township’s supervisors agreed to inform PennDOT that they don’t believe the township owes any money under terms of the grant for the Goucher Street Wheel and Walkway project constructed between Alberta Avenue and Campus Drive in the fall.

The $1 million project was paid for by a Federal Highway Administration grant and administered by PennDOT.

The state transportation department has asked the township to use money from its general fund budget to pay for an audit verifying that the project funds were spent properly, said township Solicitor Robert Shahade.

Shahade believes the matter probably is just a misunderstanding because nowhere in the grant was there anything about the township having to pay for the audit. He said the grant stated there would be no cost to the township for the project.

Upper Yoder did incur some fees from its own professionals during the process, Shahade said.

In other business at Thursday’s meeting, the supervisors:

• Agreed to conduct their annual road inspection April 2.

• Appointed Joseph Veranese to be the township’s representative to the Westmont Hilltop Recreation Commission. He replaces township Supervisor Robert Amistadi, who did not seek another three-year term. The appointment becomes effective April 1.

• Reappointed Supervisor Roy Shaffer to a four-year term on the township planning commission. The term is effective April 1.

Power in Moxham expected to be restored by 1 p.m. Tuesday
One person was sent to the hospital Tuesday after a vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Johnstown leaving some customers without power, authorities said. The one-vehicle crash happened on Bridge Street in the Moxham section of Johnstown at 1:14 a.m., fire Chief Anthony Kovacic said. When firefighters arrived, they found utility wires down, he said. Denny Platt, area manager for Penelec, said 402 customers initially lost power, including North American Hoganas High Alloys, a business which is located on Bridge Street. Power was restored to all but nine customers by 3:30 a.m., he said. The remaining nine customers are expected to have power restored by 1 p.m., Platt said.
