As region digs out, weather is expected to turn milder

JOHNSTOWN — A heavy, wet snow arrived with a fury Wednesday morning, piling up to 4 inches in downtown Johnstown and 8 inches at a Somerset County ski resort.

By noon, the snow had stopped, and by mid-afternoon a fair amount of the snow had melted as temperatures climbed well into the 30s.

Springlike temperatures are expected to move in, and by the weekend, all the snow should be gone.

Brian Edwards, a meteorologist with AccuWeather, State College, said the storm dumped nearly 6 inches of snow just outside the city in Belmont; 81/2 inches in Ogletown; 41/2 inches in Somerset Borough; 8 inches at Hidden Valley Ski Resort; and nearly 9 inches in Glencoe, located near Fairhope.

Edwards said Indiana received 91/2 inches of snow; Breezewood and Everett, 6; Ligonier, 8; and Altoona 7.

Today and Friday are expected to be chilly, but the mercury should reach 47 degrees on Saturday and 55 on Sunday, he said.

“That’s the weather story, he said. “Turning milder.”

Edwards said the western part of Virginia was hit hardest by Wednesday’s storm, receiving 15 to 20 inches.

Just outside Washington, D.C., the snow piled up to a foot in places, but the nation’s capital itself received very little snowfall, he said.

In western Pennsylvania, utilities reported only light power outages, though snowfall in some areas totaled a foot or more.

Most areas had 4 to 6 inches and by Wednesday afternoon, main roads were clear.

Schools across southwestern and central Pennsylvania had delays or closures, but state offices remained open.

One person was sent to the hospital Tuesday after a vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Johnstown leaving some customers without power, authorities said. The one-vehicle crash happened on Bridge Street in the Moxham section of Johnstown at 1:14 a.m., fire Chief Anthony Kovacic said. When firefighters arrived, they found utility wires down, he said. Denny Platt, area manager for Penelec, said 402 customers initially lost power, including North American Hoganas High Alloys, a business which is located on Bridge Street. Power was restored to all but nine customers by 3:30 a.m., he said. The remaining nine customers are expected to have power restored by 1 p.m., Platt said.
