Chowing down for charity

‘Big’ Brian Subich raising funds for St. Vincent de Paul

— A Johnstown man plans to go on an eating binge to raise money for area residents who don’t have food to feed their families.

“Big” Brian Subich, a world-ranked competitive eater, has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul to raise needed funds for the organization’s food bank and soup kitchen.

On Sept. 4, Subich will compete in the National Buffalo Wing Festival’s World Wing Eating Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. Donations raised to support his efforts at the competition will go to St. Vincent de Paul.

“Having so many people pushing for me to do well will help my performance,” the eating champ said. “But more importantly, it will be a great incentive knowing that the more wings I eat, the more people in the community I’ll be able to help.”

Subich will compete against 2011 Nathan’s Hot Dog champion Joey Chestnut along with the defending World Wing eating champion, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas.

“I decided to do this fundraiser because over the past eight years I’ve had a lot of support from family, friends and the community, and I thought it would be a fun way to give back to the area,” Subich said.

There are three ways for people to support the fundraiser.

• “Dollars for Wings” will allow supporters to pledge a set amount of money for each wing Subich eats during the 10-minute contest. Pledges can be emailed to bsubich@aol.com before the contest.

• “Dollars for de Paul” is a simple pledge of any amount – regardless of the number of wings eaten. Donations can be mailed to St. Vincent de Paul, 927 Franklin St., Johnstown, Pa. 15905. Make checks payable to: St. Vincent de Paul Food for Families/Johnstown.

Subich said the person who donates the largest amount of money will receive a 2011 National Buffalo Wing Festival T-shirt signed by all of the eaters in the contest.

• Also, at 8 p.m. Aug. 27, Hometown Bar & Grill on Scalp Avenue in Richland Township will host a five-minute wing eat-off pairing Subich against a team of eaters from the bar and from the St. Vincent de Paul organization.

Admission is free, but donations for St. Vincent de Paul are welcome.

“I’ve set a goal of raising $2,500 for St. Vincent de Paul, and I’m sure with the generosity of the people of Johnstown, we’ll be able to meet that goal,” Subich said. “St. Vincent de Paul does so many good things for the people in our community, and I wanted to help put a spotlight on them and help them raise money.”

For additional information, contact Subich at 242-1946.
