The Cambria County Conservation District will meet with farmers and anyone with an animal operation of any size next week to outline how to develop a manure-management plan as required by the state.
The session will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Disaster’s Edge, the district’s environmental center at the Park of 1889 in Sidman.
The state Department of Environmental Protection says that all animal operations in the state that generate manure and all farming operations that import manure are required to have a written manure-management plan, said Louis Kopczyk, county engineer with the conservation district.
The manure-management plans must follow a specified written format and must include a map of the operation, he said.
A workbook has been developed to serve as a guide in development of the plan.
Impacted operations include commercial farms, households with one or several horses and properties where one or several head of livestock are being raised for showing at a fair or for home consumption.
Pre-registration for the meeting is not required, but Kopczyk recommends that anyone planning to attend contact the conservation district at 472-2120 for a list of information needed to develop the plan.
