Momentum continues to build toward developing a Conemaugh River geothermal project to soak up major mine drainage pools near Point Stadium.
A new $10,000 investment from the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds will be put toward funds already collected to begin initial feasibility studies – the first of several needed to make a geothermal project happen, local officials said last week.
And project partners also are applying for $90,000 in environmental funds from a $3.5 million GenOn lawsuit settlement that would enable them to assess the market demand for energy the project would produce, the price tag to connect it to potential energy-needy customers – and pay for engineering necessary to determine development costs.
“We have some preliminary numbers that show how much energy it would produce ... but determining how much this would cost to build and who would benefit from it remains to be seen,” said Lift Johnstown’s Brad Clemenson, who has been working with the Greater Johnstown Watershed Association and other project partners.
The section of the Conemaugh, just below the Inclined Plane, has been degraded by at least two mine pools for generations.
