VFW latest target for South Fork burglars

SOUTH FORK — Burglars tried to hit another Maple Street location overnight Wednesday, marking the third break-in attempt in about 24 hours, state police reported.

Police reported that someone attempted to pry open a wooden door with steel outer shell at the South Fork Memorial Post 7524 VFW at 415 Maple St.

The burglary attempt was not successful, but the door sustained about $400 in damage, police said.

Wednesday night’s failed attempt followed two similar incidents overnight Tuesday in the next two blocks of Maple Street.

Burglars made off with about $75 in cash, but caused about $300 damage at the First United Methodist Church at 500 Maple St.

The same night, the back door was damaged when someone tried to force their way into Valko’s A.G. market at 611 Maple St.

Another string of burglaries was investigated before Christmas in South Fork, and three others were reported in other areas of Forest Hills School District in January.

State police have been taking all of South Fork’s calls since both part-time officers resigned because of changes instituted by new Mayor Don Hudson.

Borough Council members are expected to review job applicants for the police positions at council’s regular meeting Monday evening.
