Members of Civil Air Patrol help collect food for needy

JOHNSTOWN — About 250 people will sit down for Thanksgiving dinner today at St. Vincent de Paul’s Family Kitchen in Johnstown, and a few hundred more are expected for Christmas dinner next month.

Food donations to the family kitchen keep the hungry fed, and this year, the Pennsylvania Civil Air Patrol also has stepped in to help.

Members of Johnstown Squadron 1501 collected food donated by employees of six district justice offices in the Johnstown area.

It is the first time that the Civil Air Patrol has collected food from the court staff, who were more than willing to contribute, squadron Capt. Sam Allison said.

“The girls at the offices were very compassionate and very generous,” said Allison, who also is a state constable.

With many churches and civic groups collecting food for the needy at this time of year, Allison tried a different approach to finding donations.

“I contacted six judges, and all of them were very receptive and allowed to me to talk with their staffs,” he said.

The result was more than 500 pounds of food donated.

Allison delivered the food to the family kitchen on Wednesday.

“Sam’s contribution really helps us,” said James Shank, supervisor for the family kitchen. “Nowadays, it’s hard for people to donate the way the economy is right now. Every little bit helps.”

Shank also said 15 turkeys were donated by other contributors.

With the success of this year’s food drive, Squadron 1501 members plan to contribute again next year.

The family kitchen, 231 Bedford St., is open today at noon.
