Business helps library cover funding shortfall

— A local business has stepped up to help out the Cambria County Library.

In response to state funding cuts, the library recently embarked on a direct-mail fundraising campaign to help meet expenses and increased demand from users. An estimated 20,000 brochures went out to Johnstown residents and detailed how the community can help improve the library’s financial picture.

Michael Craig, owner of FloorCareMD of Johnstown, said after he received the mailer he and his family discussed what they could do to help.

Craig decided he would offer his services for free and cleaned the entire third-floor library carpet, which includes the heavily used teen area, Teen Xscape.

“My kids have attended the storytime programming for years and we appreciate the library, so this was a way to give back because the library is a good resource for the community,” he said.

In addition, Craig launched “Clean Floors Support Books and More” and the business will give 30 percent of the profits for each new carpet and tile cleaning job it receives through the end of January to the library’s campaign.

Lyn Meek, director of the library, said Craig’s involvement is a win-win for both the library and his business because they both benefit from the arrangement.

“He (Craig) told me this also is a way to challenge other businesses to get involved and donate to the library,” she said.

Craig has since sent out his “Clean Floors Support Books and More” mailers and hopes it will increase business for his company.

“I have been getting some requests, mostly from neighbors of the library,” he said.

Meek added that the campaign is going strong and people are opening up their wallets and giving whatever they can.

“We’ve had donations ranging from $3 to $250 and everything in between,” she said.

“We want the community to know we are lucky to have this type of quality facility and we are seeing that people appreciate this library.”
