CLAYSBURG —
The Special Olympics Pennsylvania Winter Games wrapped up in the area on Tuesday, but before the athletes said their final goodbyes they gave it one last shot at taking home some medals.
About 80 athletes from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware took to the slopes at Blue Knob Four Seasons Resort to compete in snowshoe and cross-country skiing.
“We have some heavy-duty competition going on here,” said Sue Putman, venue competition director and cross-country competition director for Special Olympics Pennsylvania.
Snowshoe, which has been a part of the Games for eight years, offers competitors races in 25 and
50 meters for entry level and 100 through 1,600 meters for the more advanced. There also is a relay event.
“As you get older you get more injuries, but with snowshoe you can still compete and don’t need to worry as much about injuries, so it’s a lifelong sport and not just for the young,” said Ginny Boyles, snowshoe supervisor and acting sports director with Special Olympics Pennsylvania.
Cross-country offers entry and intermediate competition with varying distances and a relay.
“We have about 10 to 15 athletes who compete in both snowshoe and cross-country,” Putman said.
