Local United Way joins in national day of giving

JOHNSTOWN — The United Way of the Laurel Highlands has joined the inaugural #GivingTuesday, a nationwide movement that brings together a blend of partners – charities, families, businesses and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

The # symbol, called a hashtag, is mainly used on the Twitter social media service as a way to search and curate tweets by user-defined categories.

#GivingTuesday is scheduled for Nov. 27 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday – and will harness the power of social media to create an opening day for

giving.

“We have a day for giving thanks and two days for getting deals, and this year we are asking the public to join us as we help create #GivingTuesday ... the giving season’s opening day,” said Bill McKinney, president of the United Way of the Laurel Highlands.

“It’s a simple idea. By making a donation to the United Way or your favorite charity on

Nov. 27, you will be joining a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity.”

#GivingTuesday has already inspired more than 1,400 organizations and people in all 50 states and around the world to take collaborative action.

They are striving to improve their local communities and give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and to help create a better world.

Salisbury proved it can happen here

Rendezvous attracts diverse crowd
