Alleged gunman jailed

Police say Portage shooting may be drug-related

PORTAGE — A local man is in jail on charges that he shot and wounded another local man early Tuesday in what police say may be a drug-related incident.

The suspect, Benjamin Gorden Schoenfeld, 33, of the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue, is accused of shooting 34-year-old Donald E. Lewis III.

Police were dispatched at 2:26 a.m. to Lewis’ residence in the 600 block of Maken Street.

Police Chief Ed Miller said that Schoenfeld allegedly pounded on the door and shot Lewis through the door’s glass window.

Miller said the incident appeared to be drug-related.

Lewis received a gunshot wound to an arm and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. The chief said that the wound did not appear to be life-threatening. A hospital spokesman said Lewis was released.

Schoenfeld fled and reportedly returned to his home before he voluntarily turned himself in to the police without incident, Miller said.

The handgun used in the shooting was recovered, according to the chief.

Schoenfeld was arraigned before District Judge Galen Decort on charges of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and recklessly endangering another person.

He was lodged in the county prison in lieu of $125,000 bond. A preliminary hearing will be held Dec. 19 at Decort’s office.

The suspect has a prior criminal record in Cambria County - a theft case in 2009 and two earlier drunken driving cases, according to online court dockets.
