Troopers arrest man in Somerset meth case

SOMERSET — When state police from Somerset found Justin Carr on Monday, they said he was carrying a hunting knife, four cellphones, $329, 21 oxycodone tablets – and a hypodermic needle between his buttocks.

When the troopers went to Carr’s apartment in the 100 block of South Vincent Avenue, they said they found something else: four “highly volatile” methamphetamine labs.

Members of the state police Clandestine Lab Response Team, wearing protective gear, cleared the apartment of lithium batteries, camp stove fuel, kerosene, Sudafed cold medication and other items.

Meth can be “cooked” in a plastic soda bottle using the small amounts of pseudoephedrine, which is found in cold medicine.

Carr’s girlfriend, Samantha Elaine McKenzie, allowed troopers inside the apartment where the items were found, police said. The confiscated items were taken to the state police crime lab in Greensburg.

Police were searching for Carr, 21, in connection with a criminal mischief incident at the local Wal-Mart when they found him along Tayman Avenue.

Carr was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Kenneth Johnson of Somerset on charges including manufacturing crystal meth, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children. Carr is being held in the Somerset County Jail on $100,000 bond.

McKenzie, 20, was arraigned on drug-related charges and released on unsecured bond.
