Bill Cosby coming to War Memorial

JOHNSTOWN — Hey, hey, hey.

Comedy legend Bill Cosby will make an appearance at 7:30 p.m. March 13 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena, 326 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown.

Tickets will go on sale Friday for Cosby’s show, which is being made available through a partnership with McAneny Brothers Inc. of Ebensburg, a wholesale meat and produce distributor.

Tom Grenell, War Memorial general manager, said the show by one of America’s most beloved comedians was not on the arena’s regular schedule.

“McAneny’s will have their food show at the Pasquerilla Conference Center, and this is part of their celebration,” he said. “We’ve worked on this a long time.”

Grenell has seen one of Cosby’s live performances and called him “a magnificent, timeless performer.”

“Anyone would find enjoyment,” Grenell said. “We are thrilled. Bringing him to Johnstown will be great for the area. Those who come will have the time of their lives.”

Cosby, whose comedy transcends age, gender and cultural barriers, is known for his humorous routines and albums as well as his best-selling books, including “Fatherhood,” “Time Flies” and his current best-seller, “I Didn’t Ask to Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was.”

He broke television’s racial barrier in “I Spy,” becoming the first black to co-star on a television series and winning three consecutive Emmys.

Cosby also created, produced and hosted the animated series “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids,” but his greatest contribution to American entertainment and culture has to be “The Cosby Show,” a sitcom about a close-knit, upper class black family that ran from 1984 to 1992 and is still seen on reruns.

Power in Moxham expected to be restored by 1 p.m. Tuesday
One person was sent to the hospital Tuesday after a vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Johnstown leaving some customers without power, authorities said. The one-vehicle crash happened on Bridge Street in the Moxham section of Johnstown at 1:14 a.m., fire Chief Anthony Kovacic said. When firefighters arrived, they found utility wires down, he said. Denny Platt, area manager for Penelec, said 402 customers initially lost power, including North American Hoganas High Alloys, a business which is located on Bridge Street. Power was restored to all but nine customers by 3:30 a.m., he said. The remaining nine customers are expected to have power restored by 1 p.m., Platt said.
