Two suspects in a Bedford County gun store burglary earlier this week were caught Tuesday with a carload of guns following a chase through Baltimore.
Police said the pair, Garrett Gene Sherlock, 25, of the 600 block of Branch Street, Saxton, and Michael Joshua Faircloth, 25, of the 200 block of Eighth Street, Saxton, were arrested after their car, driven by Sherlock, crashed during the police chase.
Nearly 30 guns were recovered, a Baltimore police spokesman told The Associated Press. Both Baltimore police and U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms officials have filed charges against the pair.
Both men sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to a trauma unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Their conditions were listed as serious but stable on Tuesday evening, Baltimore police said.
The Saxton Outdoor Supply on Raystown Road in Saxton was burglarized early Monday with the pair allegedly taking more than 30 handguns, Baltimore police said.
A state police report said surveillance video of the break-in showed a car backing into the front door of the store, knocking the door off its hinges. A person wearing a hooded jacket broke a glass case containing handguns and took the weapons.
Baltimore police received a tip that the men planned sell the guns about 150 miles southeast in the Charm City, according to Baltimore Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Baltimore officers spotted one of the suspect’s cars in the city, investigators said. When the men realized police were following them, a brief chase occurred about 4 a.m. Tuesday before the car crashed into a parked car in the West Hills neighborhood, Guglielmi said.
He said police found 29 guns in the car, including a loaded gun under a seat, and suspected cocaine.
ATF Special Agent Steve Bartholomew said federal investigators are working to verify the guns’ origins, saying it is believed many will be traced to the Saxton shop.
All of them were handguns, he added.
“The good news here is that they were swiftly recovered before they could potentially be diverted to the criminal element,” Bartholomew added, noting weapons trafficking and gun store thefts often end up putting guns on the black market.
Theft or possession of a stolen handgun can lead to a maximum of five years in federal prison, he said.
