MEYERSDALE —
A Meyersdale businessman faces theft charges after allegedly failing to deliver and install a grave monument ordered by a Windber resident.
Roger P. Lichty, 59, of the 500 block of Keystone Street in Meyersdale, accepted $1,160 in March 2010 through his family’s business, Cook & Lintz Memorials on Beachley Street in Meyersdale, Somerset County Detective Jason Hunter said in the criminal complaint.
When the monument did not arrive, Hunter said, the alleged victims made numerous calls to Lichty and his business without satisfaction.
During his investigation, Hunter reports he contacted Meyersdale police and was told the situation was “an ongoing problem.” Hunter said 10 civil suits for similar offenses have been filed against Lichty at District Judge Douglas Bell’s office in Meyersdale.
Charges of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds and receiving stolen property were filed Friday at District Judge Joseph Cannoni’s office in Windber.
Contacted at his home, Lichty said the situation is a misunderstanding.
“We didn’t steal anyone’s money,” Lichty said. “It was an order. We are behind time. Is that a crime? They are going to get a refund here within a few days.”
