City man shot during alleged burglary

— A Johnstown man was shot during a burglary attempt in Indiana County and then burglarized a home in Armstrong County before he was arrested, authorities said Thursday.

Authorities still are trying to piece together details in the shooting of 27-year-old Clinton Edwards of Fairfield Avenue.

State police in Indiana said Edwards was shot twice as he attempted to burglarize a residence on Weston Road in Cherryhill Township.

Edwards arrived at the home at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to possibly burglarize the barn or garage when he was confronted by the homeowner, whom he was acquainted with, state police Trooper John Matchik said.

“The dogs started barking, and the victim looked out the window and saw the (Edwards’) vehicle,” said Matchik, a spokesman for state police Troop A.

The resident – whose name was not given – went outside when Edwards pulled a .22-caliber, snub-nosed revolver. The men wrestled, police said, and a shot was discharged into the air.

The homeowner wrestled the gun away from Edwards and fired a shot but missed, Matchik said.

Edwards then approached the resident, who fired twice. Bullets struck the would-be burglar in the thigh and shoulder, he said.

Edwards allegedly fled in a car driven by his girlfriend, who left him in a parking lot of a nearby store.

“After she dropped him off, she returned to Cambria County,” Matchik said.

Two hours later, Edwards ended up in Armstrong County – investigators aren’t sure how – where he allegedly broke into a home and was caught by state police. He was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital, Matchik said.

“We’re still trying to piece together all the events that unfolded,” he said.

U.S. marshals and Cambria County sheriff’s deputies had been searching for Edwards, who was wanted on a probation violation.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact state police in Indiana at (724) 357-1960.
