Outdoor Heritage Month will be observed in April in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains.
This year’s theme is Learn and Serve Outdoors: Discovering Nature’s Wonders and Working to Protect Them.
Primary supporters are Natural Biodiversity, Kiski-Conemaugh Stream Team, Stonycreek-Conemaugh River Improvement Project, Jenner Rod and Gun Club, Johnstown Area Heritage Association, Dominion Foundation, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Grants Program and Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds.
An opening ceremony for program sponsors, volunteers and financial supporters will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Pasquerilla Heritage Discovery Center, 201 Sixth Ave. in Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood. Outdoor Heritage Month celebrates the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Allegheny Mountains. Each year the state House of Representatives declares the observance through an official resolution. A growing schedule of events is posted at www.ohmonth.com.
Because of state tests for some school-aged children in April, the educational centerpiece of Outdoor Heritage Month – Outdoor Adventures – will be held May 6 and 7 at Summer’s Best Two Weeks at Quemahoning Reservoir in Somerset County.
Outdoor Adventures is an annual school field trip that provides children with the chance to learn about nature, experience it and become inspired to nurture it. The Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators has named Outdoor Adventures as its 2010 Outstanding Environmental Education Program.
