Mike Mastovich | Bryan the latest in a long line of tough Rambler backs

JOHNSTOWN — Colin Bryan is a patient tailback, although his knack for speeding past defenders en route to the end zone might indicate otherwise.

The Windber senior waited his turn in a Ramblers’ system that has churned out one outstanding tailback after another in recent years.

After Kevin Erickson graduated, Ramblers fans might have wondered, who’s next? Erickson had run for a cumulative 3,100 yards during his final two seasons in 2007 and 2008.

Jarid Cover answered that question in stellar fashion, gaining 2,836 yards combined during his junior and senior years.

When Cover moved on after the 2010 season, Bryan didn’t wait for someone to ask the question. He went to first-year head coach Matt Grohal and pleaded his case.

“Last year Colin played wing back for us because we had Jarid Cover back there,” said Grohal, who continued using the single-wing offense implemented by former coach Phil DeMarco during the 2004 season. “In the offseason when I got the job, he said, ‘Coach, can I move back to tailback?’ There was no hesitation because he’s a natural tailback. We’ve had Kevin Erickson and Jarid Cover, and now Colin. We’ve had some great tailbacks. He just had to wait his turn.”

The wait has resulted in huge dividends for Bryan and the 4-1 Ramblers, who host winless Ferndale on Friday.

According to Maxpreps.com, Bryan leads the state with 1,131 rushing yards on 119 carries.

That’s an average of 9.5 yards per run and a whopping 226.2 yards a game.

Four times in five weeks Bryan has rushed for at least 200 yards in a game. Once he went over 300 yards – a

318-yard, four touchdown effort in a 54-30 loss to Conemaugh Township in Week 4.

Bryan points to the Ramblers’ offensive line for clearing a path. He talks about his coaches, teammates and parents’ support.

Tradition also has played a role in his development.

“I’ve been waiting for this since I watched Kevin Erickson when I was a freshman and watching Jarid Cover last year when I was blocking for him,” Bryan said. “I couldn’t wait for my turn. I had to capitalize on my opportunities. It’s my senior year and I want to enjoy it as much as I can.”

His enjoyment has produced a bundle of points for Windber. Bryan’s 20 touchdowns – 19 rushing TDs – easily lead the area. So do his 130 points scored.

“He’s a 4.6 guy,” Grohal said. “He’s got tremendous feet in the hole. He’s got great vision.

“Colin’s work ethic in the offseason is unbelievable. We require them to be in there three days a week, but he’s in there four days a week. Other kids feed off of that work ethic. He’s been a great leader in that way. He’s a tremendously gifted athlete.”

What’s in a name? Shakespeare knew; so did Dad. Father’s Day is once again here. For those of us whose fathers are still with us, we hop in the car one Sunday in June annually and visit “dear old Dad,” gifting him with golf equipment, fishing gear, or those notoriously bad neckties.

    How do I escape Facebook?
Lots of stuff frustrates me. I snarl if a cheery recorded lady tells me my call is important and she’s delighted that I’m willing to wait for the next available representative.
Of course, I’ll hold. Nothing beats spending 10 minutes of my life (that I’ll never get back) listening to Barry Manilow singing “Copacabana.”

This year, Junior won’t be on the Point Stadium field for the pregame hoopla associated with opening night of the 69th annual AAABA Tournament.
He won’t watch as dozens of Corvettes and hundreds of baseball players enter through the left-field gate with their respective teams from cities such as Baltimore, New Orleans, New Brunswick and Altoona.

Bishop McCort basketball gets it. So does Greater Johnstown basketball.
Go ahead and count Somerset baseball among the mix. The same goes for Ligonier Valley softball and Northern Cambria volleyball.

There are fewer events on the daily high school sports schedules, but the stakes are going up for area athletes as the spring season heads into its final weeks.
In track and field, the three area conferences will hold their championship meets this week.
In Portage today, the WestPAC athletes will gather for their championships while the Laurel Highlands and Heritage meets will be on Tuesday at Somerset and United, respectively.

Shanksville senior Kayla Stockenus’ surpassing the 2,000-point mark in Tuesday’s loss to Windber brought a rare milestone back into the area’s spotlight.
While 1,000-point scorers have become fairly common in both boys and girls basketball, 2,000 is a much more rare feat.

It’s still only the second week of the high school hoops season and already some patterns are beginning to emerge and two players have topped the 1,000-point plateau.
With a strong starting rotation returning, the defending District 5 Class A champion Shade boys have their eyes set high again this season and are currently 6-0. The Panthers emerged with the tournament title from the 35th annual Mountain Cat Tournament at Pitt-Johnstown over the weekend, downing a talented Northern Bedford squad in the title game to win the championship.

  • MIKE MASTOVICH | Players benefit from solid foundation

Dalvin Williams and Gap Barbin are two of the area’s most dominating players this football season, but the foundation of their respective success might be traced to last season.
That’s when Williams, Johnstown’s big-play senior linebacker, learned valuable lessons while playing on a unit led by Tribune-Democrat Defensive Player of the Year Alkwan Williams.
“I just watched them in practice and learned from them and how they reacted to plays and how fast they could read them,” said Dalvin Williams, the area’s leading tackler with 91 stops through six weeks. “I picked it up from there.”
